The Real Power of Flowers

In the early days of 2003, as I was preparing for my doctoral exams, I began to think about several classmates who had become really sick in the semester they took their exams. Determined not to follow them, I picked up a copy of Dr. Andrew Weil’s book 8 Weeks to Optimum Health with the goal of boosting my immune system. The program breaks the journey down into manageable increments, adding lifestyle adjustments each week. In the first week’s “projects” under the heading “Mental/Spiritual,” Weil writes, “Buy some flowers to keep in your home, where you can enjoy them” (49).[1] I remember ta...

Inspiring Gardens Series: The Lost Gardens of Heligan

My mom and I love going to England and visiting as many gardens as we possibly can. We've been to Sissinghurst, Hidcote Manor, Kiftsgate Court, Highgrove, Kew, Great Dixter, and many others, both large and small. We go mainly because we are obsessed with gardening and love immersing ourselves in the beauty of these magnificent places. But we are also drawn to these gardens for the inspiration they provide us. Now, sometimes that can be a bit problematic. For example, my mom's yard is tiny, but when we stroll around these iconic gardens, she decides that she needs a pond and a wall and an ornamental tree and a scu...

Firmly Rooted

We have inadvertently lived a nomadic life. Although my husband (whom I call Turfman…he loves lawns) had grown accustomed to moving regularly with the Army, he had left the military by the time I met him. I had no reason to believe that we would leave my hometown outside of Dayton, Ohio, but within a few months, our company moved us to Pensacola, Florida. We thought it might prove to be a place we could call home, and so it was for a few years. But when his boss told us we would have to relocate to a place we weren’t wild about, Turfman instead took a job outside of Atlanta, where I hoped we could put down so...

Getting Started

This farm has been a dream in my head for a year now. For the first few months, I would walk the back of our property with a tape measure and plot out just how much land I could claim for rows of flowers. Then I started walking with tape measure and spray paint, essentially my way of planting my flag and calling the territory mine. At the same time, I began researchingalmost incessantly, a necessary activity that has been engraved on my brain after so many years of higher education and teaching. Nothing in this world can work without reading a sufficient number of books first. I placed countless interlibrary loan...

Seed Starting on a Grand Scale

Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders. --Henry David Thoreau When I first really became interested in gardening, I began to dream of a vegetable garden. I purchased a book or two, read them diligently, and declared myself fully trained in starting plants from seed. I bought seed starting trays and packets of seeds and spent an afternoon carefully dropping a little seed into each module. Within a weeks, the seeds had sprouted and lovely lit...
